Jo
I’m Jo Vilayphone –a mom, wife, and photographer in northeast Indiana specializing in family, child, and senior portraits using natural lighting and outdoor scenery. As a mom of two littles, I know firsthand the importance of “being in the moment” with your family, but I also know those moments are fleeting. There’s no better way to relive and share these moments for years to come than with professional photos.
About Me
My passion with photography began as a young child when my elderly neighbor’s friend introduced me to his early 20th century film photography. When I started photography in the early 2000s, there was no Photoshop to correct errors, so I learned the importance of taking a great shot without the ability to digitally alter it. When I went to Indiana University in the fall of 2004, I quickly signed up for photography classes at the collegiate level. While my Bachelor’s is in Journalism, my focus was in Fine Arts photography and photojournalism. This was still all film photography developed in the darkroom. In my final year of college, Photoshop and digital photography became accessible so I took Photoshop classes to further perfect my craft.
After graduating, I decided to keep photography as a hobby while I taught middle school English to seventh and eighth graders for nearly a decade. After starting my family, I decided to put my teaching career on hold to fully pursue my photography passion as a career. From my traditional training in photojournalism, I learned to capture the unsuspecting, natural moments of a subject. However, from my experience in Fine Arts photography, I am able to mix the candid photography with the detail-oriented aspects of portrait and studio photography to capture perfectly timed photos.
